Monday Motivation: Stand

Happy Birthday, America! I hope everyone had fun celebrating  July 4th! Today, I stand and salute our great nation. May God go with us as we journey forward.

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Joshua 1:5 – NIV

“Stand.” Now that’s a word packed full of countless connotations. Just think about all the ways we use this word. Stand tall. Stand strong. Stand guard. Stand together. Stand your ground. The word “stand” summons images of strength, unity and preparedness.

Perhaps it’s my Army brat raising, but the directive “to stand” always takes me back to the parade field, the color guard in tight formation proudly bearing the American flag. I can see the  soldiers so clearly, row after row standing at full attention, backs straight, fingers poised in solemn salute. Maybe it’s those childhood images influencing my thoughts, but  the phrase, “to stand,” means “to be ready, to be strong, to have courage, to face the odds even

when the odds are against you.”

Some time ago, I heard a speaker describe the best advice he ever received from his father. Having just lost his beloved wife to cancer, the speaker was absolutely devastated. He had no idea how he could go on with life, how he could  shoulder the weight of parenting his children solo. His wise father looked him in the eye and said, “Stand, son. Just stand.”

In those few simple words, the speaker found the courage to rise up and confront his unwanted and  uncertain future. He stood tall. He stood strong. He faced the odds and became a better man for having done so.

Friends, this life is hard. Amen? We are challenged at every turn. Bad things happen, even to good people. When life deals its crushing blows, when the storm clouds roll in, all we can do is “Stand, just stand.”

I Will Stand

When the sea surrounds,

And the waves tumble and crash,

When the tide tugs at my feet,

I will stand.

When the storm clouds roll in,

And the thunder rumbles,

When the lightning strikes,

I will stand.

When the darkness falls,

And the terror invades,

When the fear enslaves me,

I will stand.

I stand upon His promises,

His love surrounds me,

I trust in His faithfulness,

His grace is sufficient.

There is no fear,

No peril,

No enemy,

That can claim me.

For I stand on the Rock,

The Rock of my salvation,

Yes, I stand on the Rock,

The Rock that cannot be moved.

Whatever may come,

I will persevere,

For He will be my strength,

And I will stand.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalm 40:2 – NIV

O Lord God, grant us the strength to stand. Help us as we face the hardships of this earthly life. Let us remember that You are with us always. You will never leave us nor forsake us. Your grace is sufficient. It is all we need. O Lord, let us stand.

In the Mighty Name of Jesus, we pray,
